Postdoctoral, Resident and Fellow Training

Inspiring Independence and Innovation

Postgraduate scholars are fundamental to the innovative research and discovery occurring at Consortium Centers and Institutes. A number of training programs and professional resources have been developed to instill the skills and knowledge necessary to launch successful and independent research, clinical and health related careers.

Programs and Fellowships

Training Programs

Interdisciplinary Training for Autism Researchers

Neuroscience of Cognitive Aging Training Program
Two to three-year NIH T32 program for Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. fellows that combines a team of neuroscience researchers, laboratories, center facilities and educational resources to train postdoctoral students for translational neuroscience research on cognitive aging

Center for Neuroscience Postdoctoral Training Program
In house training program designed to promote collaboration and provide networking and career skills. Includes a series of panel discussions, guest speakers, workshops and networking events

CTSC TL1 Pre and Postdoctoral Clinical Research Training Program
Two-year program for medical students, basic science predoctoral students and postdoctoral scholars interested in developing careers in multidisciplinary clinical and translational research

Residency

UC Davis Adult Neurology Residency Program
The mission of the UC Davis Neurology Residency Program is to educate leaders in the field of neurology who will provide excellence in high-quality, cutting-edge neurological care, and advance the neurological sciences as clinicians educators and researchers

Clinical Fellowships

Clinical Neurophysiology- EEG Track
The mission of the UCDH Clinical Neurophysiology program is to produce clinical neurophysiologists that are expert in clinical assessment, electrophysiologic testing, and management of neurologic conditions in a diverse patient population

Clinical Neurophysiology- EMG Track
The mission of the UCDH Clinical Neurophysiology program is to produce clinical neurophysiologists that are expert in clinical assessment, electrophysiologic testing, and management of neurologic conditions in a diverse patient population. We accomplish that, first by providing a very robust schedule of teaching conferences, and second by maximizing the time that our fellows spend in the EMG laboratory and minimizing time in clinics and any on call responsibilities

Epilepsy
The mission of the training program is to foster expert epileptologists of the future, who will provide the highest-quality patient care for a diverse population and make significant contributions to the field of epilepsy as clinicians, educators and researchers. A level 4 comprehensive adult epilepsy program serving patients not only across Northern and Central California but also Nevada and southern borders of Oregon

Movement Disorders
The primary goal of the fellowship program is to enable fellows to develop the professional skills and competencies necessary to practice independently in the area of Movement Disorder neurology. The secondary goal is to enable fellows to attain proficiency as a Movement Disorders specialist in clinical or basic science research

Vascular Neurology
The goal of the training program is to recruit highly motivated, engaged, and qualified candidates interested in pursuing careers in clinical medicine, research scholarship, or health science education.  The program engages fellows in comprehensive neurovascular training to develop expertise in the diagnosis and management of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. Fellows will be mentored and strongly encouraged to participate in basic and/or clinical science research, quality improvement, and medical education scholarship

Neurodegenerative & Behavioral Neurology
Fellows graduate with a diverse background in the full spectrum of cognitive aging (normal, mild cognitive impairment, dementia) and with experience evaluating complex neurobehavioral patients

UC Davis Health Neurocritical Care
Fellows gain comprehensive competence in the care of both the critically ill and neurocritically injured patients, as well as a variety of medical and surgical issues that a neurointensivist can be expected to confront and manage

Clinical Neuropsychology
The program goal is to produce highly trained, scientifically knowledgeable, clinically skillful independent practitioners of clinical neuropsychology. Fellows receive extensive specialized training in clinical and cognitive psychology, behavioral neurology and neuroanatomy

Neuroradiology
Fellows have the the opportunity to develop, under supervision, progressively independent skills in the performance and interpretation of neuroradiologic imaging studies and invasive procedures

Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine Fellowship, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
This one year fellowship focuses on the diagnosis and clinical management of neuromuscular disorders and electrodiagnostic medicine. The fellowship program is designed to provide advanced knowledge and experience in the subspecialty practice of neuromuscular medicine beyond that expected of a general physiatrist

Pain Medicine Fellowship, Department of Pain Medicine
The mission of this program is to help future leaders in Pain Medicine advance through developing advanced knowledge and skills in managing patients in pain while practicing excellent patient care and participating in a stimulating research environment

Sleep Medicine Fellowship, Department of Internal Medicine
A one year, ACGME-accredited fellowship program is designed to produce skilled sleep medicine clinicians, teachers, and investigators through our interdisciplinary approach. Fellows will develop the necessary skills to practice clinical sleep medicine and/or pursue a future career in academic medicine. As a multidisciplinary program, the fellowship faculty consist of specialists from pulmonary medicine, neurology, dentistry, psychiatry, pediatrics, otolaryngology, and dentistry

Seminars and Groups

K-Club
NIH K series training grants (and similar grants from foundations) provide an opportunity for faculty in neurology and neurosurgery to set aside 50% or more of their effort for 2 to 5 years for mentored research training.  The UC Davis Departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery K club, initiated by Drs. Brooks-Kayal and Harsh in the summer of 2021,  convenes monthly for discussions of best practices for applying for, engaging in, and transitioning from these training grants to an independent research career.  Please email  Vicki Wheelock or David Pleasure for more information.

UC Davis Postdoctoral Research Symposium
The goal of this symposium is to showcase the contribution of postdocs to the advancement of science at UC Davis
