Research Levels

The nervous system is remarkably complex. Understanding such a complex system requires defining its components (Genes and Molecules) and determining how the individual elements work (Cells and Signals), how they cooperate to mediate particular functions (Circuits and Systems), especially cognitive functions (Cognition), and what computations are implemented by the brain and how these computations are implemented biophysically (Computational Neuroscience). Basic knowledge about how the brain works is essential for translating that knowledge into approaches or products that will assist, restore, and enhance life's activities (Translational Neuroscience), ideally leading to new treatments and therapies for the wide range of devastating brain diseases (Clinical Neuroscience). Research in the UC Davis Neuroscience Consortium extends over all of these levels of analysis in seeking a comprehensive understanding of the function and dysfunction of the nervous system and innovative approaches to improve lives and clinical care.
